Taxonomic Notes on Persicaria hydropiper (L.) Delarbre (Subiberi)

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 11 Sayı: 3, 209 - 219, 30.12.2024

Öz

Persicaria hydropiper (L.) Delarbre, is a herbaceous annual species distributed mostly in damp places and aquatic habitats of Asia and Europe, including Türkiye. Specimens of the taxon are characterized by taproot, erect stem, elliptic-lanceolate leaf, tubular ochrea, brown glandular perianth and typical trigonous dark brown nut fruits. When the specimens belonging to Persicaria leblebicii (Yıld.) Raus (=Polygonum leblebicii Yıld.), which was published as a new species from our country, and Persicaria hydropiperoides (Michx.) Small, which was given as a new record, were examined, it was determined that they had similar morphological characteristics with P. hydropiper specimens. This morphological similarity is highly supported by phylogenetic analyses based on nrDNA ITS data. This situation shows that the samples given as P. leblebicii and P. hydropiperoides in our country belong to the P. hydropiper. In this study, the extended description, detailed chorology and phylogenetic relationships of the P. hydropiper, which is widespread in Türkiye, was presented in detail for the first time based on newly collected specimens and stored samples in various herbaria, and important contributions were made to the taxonomy of the species.
