The Effect of Seed Moisture Content on Storage Longevity of Marrow (Cucurbita pepo L. Sakız Kabağı) Seeds

The effect of seed moisture content on storage longevity of marrow (Cucurbita pepo L. var. Sakız Kabağı) seeds was investigated. Seeds were stored at 40℃ with 6.5, 10.0, 13.7, 14.5 and 16.5 percent moisture content hermetically during 24 days in storage. Total and normal germination percentages, root length (cm, 3th day of the test) and P₅₀ (time taken for viability to drop to 50%) were determined. The highest longevity was observed in seeds stored with 6.5% moisture. These had 53% germinability after 24 days in storage, however, as seed moisture increases longevity shortens. There seemed to be a negative linear relationship between P₅₀ and seed moisture. This relation was observed in seeds stored between 8.5 and 16.5% moisture contents. Root length was also affected adversely by increase in seed moisture. Reduction in normal germination and root length took place before seeds become underminable. These two factors (vigor characteristics) were more sensitive to storage environment than viability. Providing seeds were stored hermetically, seed moisture of lower than 10% is necessary for term seed storage, However, moisture must be reduced to 5-6% for long-term.

Tohum Neminin Kabak (Cucurbita pepo L. Sakız Kabağı) Tohumlarının Depolama Ömrüne Etkisi

Tohum neminin kabak (Cucurbita pepo L. Sakız Kabağı) tohumlarının depo ömrüne olan etkisi araştırılmıştır. Tohumlar %6.5, %8.5, %10.0, %13.7, %14.5 ve %16.5 nem düzeyinde 40℃’de hava geçirmez şekilde 24 gün depolanmış ve 3., 7., 10., 14., 17., 21. ve 24. günlerde alınan örnekler üzerinde toplam ve normal çimlenme (%), kök uzunluğu (cm, çimlenmenin 3. günü) ölçümleri yapılmıştır. Ayrıca her nem düzeyindeki tohum grubu için P₅₀ (tohumların %50’sinin ölümüne kadar geçen gün sayısı) değerleri saptanmıştır. En uzun depolama ömrü %6.5 nemdeki tohumlarda görülmüştür. 24 gün sonra bu tohumlar %50 dolayında canlılık ve normal çimlenme gösterirken nemin yükselmesiyle canlılık kaybı da hızlanmıştır. %8.5 ile 16.6 nem arası depolanan tohumlarda depolama ömrü ile tohum nemi arasında negatif bir doğrusal ilişki gözlenmiştir. Canlılıktaki azalma gibi kök uzunluğu da nemin artışıyla azalmıştır. Tohumlar canlılıklarını kaybetmeden önce normal çimlenebilme ve kuvvetli kök geliştirebilme yetilerini kaybetmişlerdir. Depolamanın canlılıktan çok bu faktörler üzerinde daha etkin olduğu gözlenmiştir. Uzun süreli depolama için %6.5, kısa süreli depolamalarda %10 dolayındaki nemin tohum kalitesini korumak açısından önemli olduğu saptanmıştır.
