BULGULAR: Katılımcıların 98%’i kadın, 62.5%’i 20-29 yaş aralığında, 65.2%’si ortaöğretim mezunu, 37.5%’i 5 yıldan fazla mesleki tecrübeye sahipti.

OBJECTIVE: The importance of assistant staff service in dentistry rises in parallel to varying treatment options and expanding clinical practice fields. However, legal regulations regarding the occupational definition and responsibility matters of the dental assistant staff are very recent and practical drawbacks are yet unknown. On the other side, many people are being recruited as assistant staff in state hospitals and private clinics and serving for several critical aspects such as secretariat, sterilization and surgical assistance without receiving a fundamental education. The aim of this study was to measure the level of knowledge of assistant staff employed in private clinics about dental implants and biomaterial utilization as modern dental topics, to determine the shift in their knowledge after the training performed and their opinions and suggestions about the training program.

METHODS: 72 assistant staff recruited in private clinics with different levels of occupational experience were given basic theoretical knowledge through the one-day training frame and examples of practice were utilized in order to reinforce the basics. An examination consisting 10 questions related to the theoretical aspect was performed in the beginning of the day and repeated at the end. A survey consisting 10 questions in regard to demographic information and evaluation of the training was also performed in the end of the day.

RESULTS: 98% were female, 62.5% were aged 20-29, 65.2% were mid-school graduate, 37.5% had >5 years of experience among participants. Correct answer ratio was 31% before and 98.2% after the training sessions. 58.3% rated the lectured issues as sufficient where 82% indicated a positive contribution to their practice. All participants stated the necessity of rehearsal of such training programs.

CONCLUSION: Legal recognition, definition of occupational responsibilities, participation in an identical education program and supportive occupational training are crucial for individuals recruited as assistant staff in dentistry.
