Abstract
Objectives: Smoking is which remains one of the biggest public health threats that the world faces. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Motivational Interviewing on the smoking urge and cessation success prediction in teachers. Materials and Methods: This study is a Randomized controlled trial. Participants were 61 teachers. Motivational Interviews were conducted with 30 smokers in the experimental and no intervention for 31 smokers in the control group. Questionnaire on Smoking Urges, Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale and Sociodemographic Data Form were used as data collecting tools. Results: The individuals in the experimental group had higher scores from the Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale and its Determination and Readiness and Health Perception and Favourable Environment subscales compared to the control group (p<0.05). After the intervention, the individuals in the experimental group had lower mean scores on the Questionnaire on Smoking Urges than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Motivational Interview-based counseling practices should be used into routine practices in smoking cessation outpatient clinics in order to ensure and maintain behavioral changes. It is recommended to conduct school health studies to increase the awareness of teachers role model for healthy behaviours for community about the consequences of smoking.
