The Impact of The COVID-19 Pandemic Process on Patient-Centered Care Competence and Mental Health of Pediatric Nurses

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 14 Sayı: 2, 426 - 434, 30.08.2025

Öz

Objective: This cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric nurses’ patient-centered care competence and mental health. Materials and Methods: Data collection tools were “Introductory Experiences in the COVID-19 Pandemic Process”, “Patient-Centered Care Competence (PCCC) Scale” and “Depression Anxiety Stress Scale Short Form (DASS-21) were used in the survey”. Results: Working in a COVID-19 service, increased workload, contact with the materials which were infected or at risk of transmitting infection, being infected or family members' having diagnosis of COVID-19 infection and thinking that their physical health deteriorated raised depression, anxiety, and stress and lowered PCCC total mean score (p<0.05). As the depression, anxiety, and stress of the nurses increased, their patient-centered care competence scores decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: Interventions and programs should be implemented to develop skills in coping with difficult emotions in crises such as pandemics.
