The unknown darkness of mankind according to psychoanalysis which appears when fronting one’s childhood, fears and aspirations is the unconscious. As well as being considered as a space where unwanted feelings and thoughts are thrown, the unconscious also has a dynamic structure where important connections come together and therefore is a resource that nourishes our ego. Psychoanalysis, developed by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century to realize the unconscious analysis of individuals, has been used over time as an auxiliary method in analyzing literary works. Theory of psychoanalytic literary criticism also features a theory which adds new meanings to the text with its new and different perspectives by the analysis of the literary texts which reflects the author's personality, biography, and the unconscious. 'Oedipus Complex', being the complexity of all neuroses, is the emergence of jealousy and competitive feelings that the child experiences by the awareness of the sexual intercourse between their parents. In this study, one of the most important figures in Turkish literature; Orhan Pamuk’s novel, Kırmızı Saçlı Kadın (The Red Haired Woman), was examined with a psychoanalytic approach. The novel’s characters were found to have neurotic characteristics and the factors that could be caused by this situation were discussed in the light of the ‘Oedipus Complex’, which is one of the lines forming the theoretical background of the psychoanalytic method developed by Freud. As a result of the study, it was understood that Kırmızı Saçlı Kadın is a suitable text for analysis in the context of the theory of psychoanalytic literary criticism theory.
