Since ancient Rome till today essential oils, which are used in cosmetics, perfumes, pharmacy and food industry,
were produced with different methods. Distillation especially hydrodistillation (HD),extraction and pressing are
the more common methods used. In the last years supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), microwave extraction
(MWE) and solidphase microextraction (SPME) are used as modern methods in essential oil production. In this
study, the common methods the advantages and disadvantages used in essential oil production are shortly
reviewed.
