Investigating parental views on febrile convulsions in children: A single-center study

Purpose: Febrile convulsion (FC) is the most common self-limiting seizure type in childhood. With this study, we aimed to evaluate the attitudes of parents of children with FC regarding these seizures and their readiness to intervene in seizures. Materials and Methods: For our descriptive study, we included parents of 158 children who visited our polyclinic due to FC between January 2023 and January 2024. Participants were asked to provide demographic data and complete a case form that included questions about FC concerns and FC intervention. They were required to fill out questionnaires to assess their attitudes. We used Mann-Whitney U tests to compare continuous data and considered a type-1 error level of 5% as statistically significant. Results: In our study, 72.8% of questions were answered by mothers, and fathers answered 25.3%. The study participants were mostly from urban areas, with an average age of 26 months. The age of the first FC was 20 months. 72.8% of parents owned thermometers and checked their children's temperature an average of seven times per day when they had a fever. The age of boys at First FC was significantly lower than girls (p=0.005). Girls' fathers had significantly higher education levels than boys' fathers (p=0.002). Mothers of boys had higher education levels than mothers of girls at the preliminary school level or lower (p=0.003). Most of the participants (93.7%) did not equate FC with epilepsy, and an overwhelming majority (95.6%) did not consider anti-seizure medication to be a crucial factor for their children. The majority of parents did not foresee their children needing special accommodations after FC. Despite the high percentage of participants who knew about the need for a side-lying position during FC, a considerable number were unaware of the use of antipyretics for febrile illnesses. Conclusion: Dispelling parental misunderstandings and increasing awareness of FK intervention can enhance the family's overall happiness and reduce stress related to their child's fevers.
