The Asymmetric Impact of Geopolitical Risk on the Stock Market: Evidence from Turkey with NARDL Test
Öz
This study aims to investigate the impact of geopolitical risks on stock markets during a period when financial markets have become increasingly sensitive to global uncertainties. Given Turkey's geographical and strategic proximity to geopolitical tensions, the repercussions of this relationship on the Turkish economy are particularly noteworthy. This relationship is analyzed using the Non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model for the period 2010:01–2025:09. This approach allows for the decomposition of asymmetric effects arising from increases (positive shocks) and decreases (negative shocks) in geopolitical risks. The findings reveal a long-term cointegration relationship between geopolitical risks and the stock market in Turkey. Contrary to traditional expectations in the literature, it has been determined that increases in geopolitical risks have a positive effect on the BIST 100 index, while decreases have a negative effect. The findings indicate that since geopolitical tensions in Turkey are generally accompanied by exchange rate shocks and inflationary pressures, the BIST 100 may serve a function consistent with asset substitution and inflation hedging behaviors during such periods. Furthermore, it is concluded that the exchange rate, credit default swap premiums, and the pandemic period also have statistically significant effects on the stock market index.
