Reflectıons of the 1939 Great Erzıncan Earthquake in the Turkısh Press
Abstract
The 1939 Erzincan Earthquake, also known as the Great Erzincan Earthquake, occurred on December 27.1939 with a magnitude of 7,9 with its epicenter in Erzincan. Because of this tremor, 116,720 buildings were destroyed. According to official records, 32,968 people lost their lives and more than 100.000 people were injured. The main reasons for the high death toll are the harsh winter conditions and the difficult conditions under which aid and search and rescue activities were carried out. This earthquake is considered the first of a series of major earthquakes that occurred on the North Anatolian Fault Line between 1939 and 1999 and tended to shift westward. In terms of magnitude, the Erzincan Earthquake, which is among the few mega earthquakes that have occurred on land worldwide, is the second largest earthquake recorded in Anatolia after the 8,0 magnitude North Anatolian Earthquake that occurred in 1668, along with the 7,8 magnitude Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in 2023. It is also recorded as the second earthquake that resulted in the highest loss of life in the history of the Republic of Turkey.
