An Evaluation Of Migrant Child Studies In The Context Of Sociology Of Childhood

Abstract

Beyond being a biological development, childhood is a socially constructed category that varies according to cultural contexts. For many years, a structural-functionalist theoretical perspective dominated the sociological treatment of childhood, focusing on family and socialization. The new sociology of childhood, which began to develop with a hermeneutic approach, sought to make the child visible as a social subject and explore the meaning of their experiences. One of the areas focused on the new sociology of childhood is migrant children. Research on how migrant children reconstruct their childhoods and how they position themselves as social actors is relatively recent. Pioneering studies have highlighted the need to understand that migrant children are not a homogeneous or universal category and that their experiences are constructed differently according to social, economic, and cultural contexts. This article examines the transformation of the child and childhood phenomenon in sociology from a socialization approach to a hermeneutic approach. It also evaluates studies on migrant children and, specifically, Syrian children under temporary protection in Turkey within the context of the new sociology of childhood.
