Investment Experiences in Middle and Lower Income Group Families: Cryptocurrencies and Economic Losses

Abstract

This study aims to examine the motivations that lead individuals from middle-lower income groups to invest in cryptocurrency and the relationship between these motivations with social and economic hardships. Hence, the main research statement of this study is that cryptocurrency investment is an increasingly used method for family members with middle-lower socioeconomic income to overcome financial difficulties, and the result of this method is that it deepens economic loss and increases domestic problems. The research was conducted using a phenomenological design and qualitative research approach. The data obtained through semi-structured interviews with the participants were analyzed. The findings show that individuals with lower-middle-income enter cryptocurrency investments with different motivations. These investments aim to overcome financial difficulties. However, the lack of financial literacy, irregular market conditions, and the inability to realize expected gains due to speculation have increased the losses of these investors. Moreover, they tended to borrow and take loans to compensate for these losses. The research emphasizes the importance of increasing the level of financial literacy and suggests that regulatory measures and economic assistance options should be developed.
