Between Religion, Secularism, And Gender: Hybrid Feminist Subjectivities In Post-Islamist Türkiye

Öz

This study examines the role of the transition from Islamism to post-Islamism in Türkiye in the articulation, perception, and negotiation of feminist discourses among Muslim women's groups and how this transformation has affected the political, socio-cultural, and phenomenological implications for women's identities and experiences of public space. The transition from Islamism to post-Islamism in Türkiye marks a multidimensional transformation process shaped by local and global dynamics. Post-Islamist thought has provided a platform for discussing gender equality through religious teachings while criticizing traditional Islamism's more rigid interpretations of women. Muslim women's negotiation of gender roles has emerged as a dynamic process that conflicts with spiritual teachings and social norms. Under the influence of post-Islamism, Muslim women are reinterpreting religious norms and developing an egalitarian approach at both individual and societal levels. This study reveals how the ideological, socio-cultural, and political transformations of post-Islamism, feminist thought, and gender equality are shaped among Muslim women's groups. In the survey, the phenomenological method was used within the scope of the qualitative research approach. Within the scope of the research, research data were collected through in-depth interviews with 21 people. Phenomenological data analysis and inductive thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. The research data were analyzed through seven main themes: ideological, socio-political, and socio-cultural changes; relations with feminist discourses; gender experiences; religious and cultural identity negotiations; socio-cultural challenges; women's rights; activism; and social roles within the family. In conclusion, the research highlights how this transformation has transformed Muslim women's processes of identity formation, their redefinition of social and familial roles, their engagement with feminist discourses, and the potential of feminist activism in the post-Islamic context to advance gender justice.
