Holistic Moderation: A Comparative Ethical–Behavioural Model Bridging Prophetic Guidance and Western Dietary Frameworks

Öz

This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of the concept of dietary moderation by exploring similarities and differences between the Islamic Prophetic nutritional approach and contemporary Western dietary theories. It addresses the research gap arising from a scarcity of studies integrating the value-based and behavioural dimensions inherent in the Prophetic model with the scientific rigour of modern Western nutritional frameworks. The research employed descriptive-analytical and comparative methodologies. Relevant prophetic texts on dietary moderation were collected and classified into thematic categories focusing on portion control and food quality enhancement, interpreted through authoritative Hadith commentaries. Concurrently, a systematic literature review of recent Western nutritional literature was conducted, highlighting eight key dietary theories, including the Mediterranean Diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), to identify points of convergence and divergence between the two paradigms and to evaluate their structural characteristics and practical applicability. Results demonstrated clear alignment between both paradigms in principles related to portion control, food quality improvement, and emphasis on natural foods. However, the Prophetic approach distinctly incorporates additional dimensions: ethical (gratitude), social (food sharing), and spiritual (fasting). The study recommends adopting a model termed "Holistic Moderation", integrating the profound ethical depth of Islamic teachings with the empirical precision of Western science to achieve comprehensive health equilibrium.
