Attitudes of 112 Emergency Health Services Personnel Towards Individuals Who Attempt Suicide

In our study, it was aimed to determine the attitudes of 112 emergency health services workers towards individuals who attempted suicide. The sample of the cross-sectional and descriptive study consisted of 136 ambulance workers determined by convenient sampling method. The research data were collected between 01.10.2023 and 01.03.2024 via social media accounts using a descriptive information form including questions about some sociodemographic characteristics of the employees, individual experiences related to suicide attempts, and the Attitude scale towards attempted suicide cases for evaluating emergency medical teams (ASETSA). The data were analyzed using the SPSS package program. It was determined that the majority of the participants had never thought about suicide (77%) and had not attempted suicide (93.3%). No significant difference was found between some socio-demographic characteristics, suicide-related experiences, and working hours of the participants and the total and sub-dimensions of the ASETSA. While the mean score of nurses was higher than emergency medical technicians and paramedics in the sub-dimension of medical assistance, no significant difference was found between the occupational groups in the total and other sub-dimensions of the ASETSA. The attitudes of healthcare providers and their training on the subject are important factors in the quality of care given to patients with suicidal behavior. In order to reduce suicide cases and develop effective intervention strategies, training on suicide management should be provided to healthcare personnel who first encounter suicide cases.
