Vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) of Verticillium dahliae Kleb. isolates obtained from the cotton growing areas of Aydın province
Öz
The project aimed at collecting Verticillium dahliae (Vd) isolates from cotton, assessing their Vegetative Compatibility Group (VCG)'s diversity. Between 2004 and 2005, a total of 47 Vd isolates were collected from main cotton growing areas of twelve towns in Aydın province, and tested for pathogenicity on cotton (cv. Acala SJ2) plants in growth chamber. The virulence of Vd isolates ranged from 3.83% to 100% while the rate of defoliated leaves changed from 0.0-100%. Twenty-four isolates of Vd was tested for vegetative compatibility using nitrate-nonutilizing (nit) mutants. The frequency of nit1/nit3 mutants was 98.4% while NitM mutants was 1.6%. Two VCGs were found and identified as VCG2A (1 isolate) and VCG2B (23 isolates) by using international reference strains. However, four isolates belonging to VCG2B also showed weak heterokaryon formation with tester strain of VCG1.
