Aim: Chronic illnesses and their associated processes in children can significantly impact their parents. This study was carried out to examine the effect of perceived social support on the levels of hopelessness among parents of children with celiac disease.
Material and Method: The study was performed as a correlational descriptive study with 99 parents who attended the paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinic of a university hospital. ‘Parent Descriptive Information Form’, ‘Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support’, and ‘Beck Hopelessness Scale’ were used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data.
Results: In our study, it was established that as the economic situation of the parents improved and their education level increased, the perceived social support increased and the level of hopelessness decreased. Additionally, it was found that the father's education level had a more positive effect on perceived social support and feelings of hopelessness (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Our study found that parents' perceptions of social support negatively influenced their levels of hopelessness. It is suggested that improving perceptions of social support in parents of children diagnosed with celiac disease will be beneficial in preventing them from feeling hopeless.
