Aim: This study evaluated the relationship between adherence to a plant-based diet (PBD) and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Material and Method: This study was conducted on 314 individuals aged 18-65 years between April and June 2024. A questionnaire form consisting of a general information section, food consumption frequency, and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale questions was applied to the participants.
Results: It was found that individuals who showed more adherence to healthy PBD experienced lower reflux symptoms. In comparison, individuals who showed more adherence to unhealthy PBD experienced higher abdominal pain and reflux symptoms (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The effect of a PBD on gastrointestinal health depends on individual differences and the content of the dietary pattern. The findings may help health professionals provide informed recommendations while guiding individuals' dietary preferences.
