The Effect of Antenatal Breastfeeding Education via a Hybrid Simulation Experience on Postnatal Breastfeeding: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Study

Öz

Aim: This study aims to determine the effect of antenatal breastfeeding education delivered via a hybrid simulation on postnatal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding success among pregnant women. Material and Method: The sample consisted of a total of 66 pregnant women in their 32nd to 36th gestational week, assigned using a single-blind randomized design. Participants were stratified by parity (primiparous and multiparous) and randomly assigned to two groups in a 1:1 ratio using a stratified block randomization method, with 33 participants in each group. The experimental group received a total of 90-minute breastfeeding education using a hybrid simulation consisting of a wearable breast model and standard patient. Data were collected with the “Descriptive Information Form, the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES-SF Antenatal-Postnatal), and LATCH”. The measurements were carried out by the researchers on the fifth postnatal day and the sixth postnatal week. A generalized linear model was used to analyze the data. Results: BSES-SF and LATCH mean scores showed statistically significant differences in terms of group, time, and group-by-time interaction, with P<.001 for all three measurements in BSES-SF and P<.001, .001, and =.04 for the three measurements in LATCH, respectively. The difference between the groups in terms of the time to start breastfeeding following birth, having problems with the first breastfeeding, and having breastfeeding problems within six weeks postnatal was significant (P<.001). Conclusion: Hybrid simulation may be a promising intervention for improving breastfeeding self-efficacy, breastfeeding success, time to initiation of breastfeeding after birth, breastfeeding problems during the first feeding, and outcomes during the first six weeks postpartum.
