The Effect of Positive Psychotherapy-Based Training on Negative Automatic Thoughts and Life Efficacy in Nursing Students: A Randomized Controlled Study

Öz

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the impact of Positive Psychotherapy (PPT)-based training on nursing students’ negative automatic thoughts and life effectiveness. Material and Method: A randomized controlled pretest-posttest experimental design was employed with 67 nursing students studying in a provincial city in Türkiye. The experimental group received eight sessions of PPT-based training, while the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using the Automatic Thoughts Scale and the Life Effectiveness Scale. Results: After the training, the experimental group showed a significant reduction in negative automatic thoughts (p<0.05). Moreover, notable improvements were observed in achievement motivation, mental flexibility, active initiative, and self-confidence sub-dimensions of life effectiveness (p<0.05). Conclusion: PPT-based training effectively reduced negative automatic thoughts and enhanced certain aspects of life effectiveness among nursing students. These findings highlight the potential of PPT-based psychoeducational interventions as a supportive strategy in nursing education.
