Evaluation of Uric Acid and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase Levels in Obese and Overweight Subjects

Objective: Obesity is associated with diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HT), and coronary artery disease, which have important morbidity and mortality rates. Many studies have shown the interactions between various metabolic parameters and DM and HT. Recently, close association between DM, HT and elevation of GGT and uric acid levels have been frequently studied. Thus, we aimed to study uric acid and GGT levels in non-diabetic subjects. Material and Methods: A total of 55 non-diabetic patients were included in this retrospective study. According to body mass index, 26 patients grouped into overweight (BMI=25-29.9) and 29 into obese (BMI>30) group. Results: Mean GGT (41±16) and uric acid (4.8±1.1) levels of obese group was significantly increased compared to overweight (GGT=32±17, uric acid=4.1±1) group (p=0.034 for GGT and p=0.033 for uric acid). Conclusion: Conclusion, we found in present retrospective study that GGT and uric acid levels were increased in obese non-diabetics compared to overweight non-diabetics. Increase in GGT and uric acid seems to be effect the health problems caused by obesity through different mechanisms.

OBEZ VE FAZLA KİLOLU BİREYLERDE ÜRİK ASİT VE GAMMA GLUTAMİL TRANSFERAZ DÜZEYLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Öz

Amaç: Diyabetes Mellitus (DM), hipertansiyon, koroner arter hastalığı gibi önemli mor- bidite ve mortaliteye sahip hastalıklarla obezite arasında önemli bir ilişki mevcuttur. DM ve hipertansiyon (HT) ile çeşitli metabolik parametreler arasındaki etkileşimler çok sayı- da çalışmada açık olarak gösterilmiştir. Son zamanlarda gamma glutamil transferaz (GGT) ve ürik asit düzeylerinin yüksekliği ile DM ve HT arasındaki sıkı ilişki sıkça araştırılmıştır. Biz de buradan yola çıkarak henüz DM gelişmemiş obez bireylerde ürik asit ve GGT dü- zeylerini araştırmayı amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu retrospektif çalışmaya toplam 55 non-diyabetik hasta alındı. Vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) ölçümlerine göre 26 hasta fazla kilolu (VKİ:25-29.9), 29 hasta ise obez (VKİ>30) olarak gruplandı. Bulgular: Obez grubun ortalama GGT (41±16) ve ürik asit seviyeleri (4.8±1.1) fazla ki- lolulardan (GGT=32±17, ürik asit=4.1±1) anlamlı olarak daha yüksekti (GGT için p=0.034 ve ürik asit için p=0.033). Sonuç: Bu retrospektif çalışmada non-diyabetik obez bireylerin fazla kilolu non-diyabetik bireylerden daha yüksek GGTve Ürik asit değerlerine sahip olduklarını saptadık. GGT ve ürik asitteki bu artışın, obezitenin yol açtığı sağlık sorunlarına farklı mekanizmalar yoluy- la etkili olabileceğini düşünüyoruz.
