This field study was planned retrospectively and was carried out on 59 calves belonging to different farms within the provincial or district borders of Aydın. Each calf included in the study was selected among those who had been subjected to treatment with more than one drug due to diarrhea (Group I; n=20) and/or pneumonia (Group II; n=20). As a starting criterion, those who had been on multiple drug treatment for at least one week were included. 19 other healthy calves were included in the study as the control group (III) for comparison. Serum was extracted from blood samples obtained from each calf by expert veterinarians after centrifugation and stored in the freezer. Serum DAO values were determined by competitive enzyme immunoassay technique using commercial Bovine Diamine Oxidase (DAO) ELISA tests. The mean±standard error DAO (ng/mL) values were determined as 8,22 ± 2,02, 11,44 ± 1,96 and 28,90 ± 3,59 (p< 0.001) in Groups I, II and III, respectively. As a result, it can be said that intestinal mucosal damage may develop in calves with diarrhea and/or pneumonia exposed to polypharmacy for at least 1 week, and this can be detected by decreased DAO levels compared to healthy controls.
