A Study of the Association of Depression with Self-Esteem, Family Cohesion, Academic Success, and Gender among University Students Aged 18-25 in Turkey, and TimeLimited Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with These Depressed Students

Öz

This study
investigated the relations of depression with students’ self -esteem, family
attachment and academic performence. In the Information age, university
students face with different problems regarding their family and school.
Although some students can overcome these problems, some others cannot cope
with them. Adverse conditions which many students experienced can cause mental
ilnessess, such as depression. In this project, variables which lead to
depression among students were examined. A total of 155 volunteers; 81 female
and 74 male from
different universities of Turkey were participated in the study (Mean
age:21,69). In this project, Beck depression
Inventory, IPPA Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment and The Rosenberg
Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were applied, respectively. The results of analysis
supported the relation of mother ‘dialog- self esteem’ and father ‘alienation’
with depression, but then this relation has lost its meaning with the findings
of negative significant correlation between self-esteem and depression. The
results showed that depression has a strong negative relationship with
self-esteem (correlation coefficient of - ,407). No correlation was found
between depression and academic achievement. The findings were discussed based
on the relationship of family attachment, self-esteem, and gender with
depression.

Türkiye’de 18- 25 Yaş Grubu Üniversite Öğrencileri Arasında Görülen Depresyonun; Benlik Saygısı, Aile Bağlılığı, Akademik Başarı ve Cinsiyet ile Olan İlişkisi ve Depresyonda Olan Bu Öğrencilerin Süresi Sınırlı Psikodinamik Psikoterapi ile Tedavisi

Öz

Bu çalışma üniversite öğrencilerinin benlik saygısı,
aile bağlılığı ve akademik başarısının depresyon üzerinde ilişkisini araştırmak
amacıyla yapılmıştır. Küresel Bilgi çağımızda üniversite öğrencileri; aile,
okul gibi birçok problemle karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Bazı öğrenciler bu
problemlerin üstesinden gelirken, bazı öğrenciler bu problemlerle baş
edememektedir. Yaşanılan olumsuz koşullar birçok öğrenciyi depresyon gibi
ruhsal hastalıklara itmektedir. Bu araştırmada, öğrencilerin depresyonda
olmasına neden olan değişkenler üzerinde çalışılmıştır. Araştırmaya Türkiye’nin
farklı üniversitelerinden 81’i kız 74’ü erkek, toplamda 155 öğrenci katılmıştır.
(Yaş Mean: 21.69) Çalışmada; Beck Depresyon Envanteri, IPPA Aile ve Akran
Bağlılığı Testi, son olarak Rosenberg’in Benlik Algısı testi uygulanmıştır.
Yapılan analizler sonucunda Depresyon ile Anne” iletişim-özgüven”, ve Baba
“Yabancılaşma” arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuş, ardından benlik saygısının
depresyon üzerinde ki negatif anlamlı ilişkisi ile bu ilişki anlamını
yitirmiştir. Depresyon, benlik saygısı ile (- ,407)’lik negatif kuvvetli ve
anlamlı ilişki içindedir. Depresyon kız öğrencilerde daha fazla rastlanmış olup
Depresyonun akademik başarı ile ilişkisi irdelendiğinde ise hiçbir bulguya
rastlanmamıştır.  Depresyonda olan iki
öğrenciye kısa süreli psikodinamik psikoterapi yapılmıştır. Bu bağlamda
bulgular, depresyonun aile bağlılığı, benlik saygısı ve cinsiyet ile ilişkisi
üzerinde tartışılmıştır.
