The Impact of Core Training on Lower Limb Strength in Basketball Players

Öz

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an eight-week core strength training program on lower limb strength in elite-level male basketball players. A total of 24 athletes voluntarily participated in the study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=12), which received core training in addition to their regular basketball practice, or a control group (n=12), which continued with their standard training routines. The core training program consisted of progressive exercises performed three times per week, incorporating bodyweight movements, resistance bands, and exercise balls. Lower limb strength was assessed using the ISOMED 2000 isokinetic dynamometer, measuring concentric flexion and extension at angular velocities of 60°/s and 180°/s. A mixed-design repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze time (pre- and post-test) and group (experimental and control) interactions. The results showed significant improvements in the experimental group’s isokinetic strength parameters, including peak torque, angular velocity, and repetition count (p < 0.05), while the control group showed minimal or negative changes. Post-test comparisons also revealed significant differences between groups in favor of the experimental group. These findings indicate that core strength training can effectively improve lower limb strength and may contribute positively to performance in elite-level basketball players.
