Yoga Experiences of Preservice Physical Education Teachers

Öz

This study explores the experiences of preservice physical education teachers regarding yoga practices. Designed as a case study, the research involved 25 preservice teachers selected through convenience sampling. For 12 weeks, participants engaged in a yoga program structured with breathwork, meditation, and physical movement. Data were collected via semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed through content analysis. Findings were interpreted under four main themes: 'yoga journey,' 'self-awareness,' 'mental well-being,' and 'physical well-being.' The results reveal that participants’ initial 'meditation-only' perceptions evolved as they experienced the physical aspects of the practice, leading to a deeper internalization of the process. Yoga appeared to have supportive implications for mental well-being, specifically regarding sleep quality, stress and anxiety management, and focus skills. Furthermore, participants reported increased bodily awareness and self-confidence. While initial fatigue was reported, participants subsequently developed greater flexibility and balance through improved breath and body control. In conclusion, a 12-week yoga experience may contribute to transformative perceptions of yoga, alongside enhanced focus, bodily awareness, and self-confidence; however, effects on sleep, stress, and anxiety varied based on subjective participant experiences.
