THE ROLE OF SPORTS-BASED RECREATION AREAS IN PUBLIC HEALTH AND SOCIAL INTERACTION

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 18 Sayı: 3, 621 - 636, 23.12.2024

This study comprehensively addresses the role of sports-based recreation areas on social health and social interaction. The study focuses on the potential of sports-based recreation areas to improve individuals' physical health, support mental health and strengthen social solidarity. In the study, how sports-based recreation areas encourage individuals' participation in physical activity and the effects of social interactions provided in these areas on social health were predicted, and content analysis was conducted using the MAxqda program within the framework of the research questions prepared by the researcher for 42 studies in the literature on the subject. The decrease in green areas and inequalities in access to sports areas in the urbanization process negatively affect individuals' physical activity habits. The study states that increasing public sports areas in low-income regions will support the participation of disadvantaged groups in physical activity, and the equal distribution of sports areas will contribute to the spread of healthy living habits throughout the society. In the study, participation barriers (physical, economic, social and psychological) and preference factors (environmental characteristics, service quality, social facilities and security) were discussed in detail. The lack of green areas brought about by urbanization and inequalities in access to sports facilities are the main factors that negatively affect physical activity habits. The accessibility and quality of recreational areas allow individuals to benefit from these areas more effectively. Social activities and group sports support social solidarity by reducing the problems of loneliness and social isolation of individuals. As a result, sports-oriented recreational areas have a critical role in modern urbanization as spaces that increase social harmony while supporting the physical and mental health of individuals. It is recommended that local governments and urban planners develop strategies that will support social welfare by increasing the accessibility of these areas.
