Evaluation of Ecovillages for Sustainable Development through Case Studies from Kocaeli, Türkiye
Öz
The concept of ecovillage has emerged to integrate human activities with the natural environment in response to the urgent need for sustainable development and climate change mitigation. This research aims to investigate the potential of ecovillages in Türkiye by evaluating Narköy, Kurtyeri and Ketenciler Ecovillages in Kocaeli and to develop a comprehensive set of sustainability criteria to foster sustainability. To do this, information was gathered regarding the operational structures, and an investigation was conducted into their adherence to the criteria established for economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Methodologically, observations and semi-structured interviews were conducted with informants, including managers, employees, and residents of the ecovillages. According to the results, the observed ecovillages tend to prioritise a concept such as eco-tourism rather than containing all ecovillage principles, resulting in limited integration with neighbouring communities and a lack of diversity in membership. It was found that there are potential collaborative opportunities in Kocaeli cases to address each shortcoming, and an organisational structure was proposed to achieve more sustainable ecovillages. Accordingly, the study reveals the structure of ecovillages with components: eco-farm, eco-tourism and green school. Consequently, the study contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of ecovillage sustainability, examining organisational structures in education, tourism, and agriculture, and proposing an integrated sustainability framework that serves as a guide for municipalities and grassroots initiatives in supporting the long-term viability of the ecovillage model.
