The Relationship Between Environmental Health Literacy and Environmental Sensitivity in Nursing Students
Öz
This study aims to examine the relationship between environmental health literacy and environmental sensitivity among nursing students. The research was conducted using a cross-sectional and descriptive design, and the sample consisted of students enrolled in the nursing department of a state university. The study was carried out during the 2025–2026 academic year, and data from 412 nursing students who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Data were collected through faceto face interviews using a Personal Information Form, the Environmental Health Literacy and the Environmental Sensitivity Scale. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics as well as correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between the variables. The findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between nursing students’ scores of Environmental Health Literacy Scale and Environmental Sensitivity. In particular, the knowledge/emotion, sensitive behavior, and caring behavior subdimensions of environmental sensitivity were identified as significant predictors of environmental health literacy. Moreover, although students’ rates of receiving environmental education and membership in environmental organizations were low, their awareness of environmental problems directly related to health, such as air and food, was found to be high. These results demonstrate that environmental health literacy is not limited to cognitive knowledge alone; rather, it is strengthened when integrated with attitudes and behaviors. The study findings highlight the importance of developing practice-based and holistic educational approaches to environmental health within nursing education.
