Valorization of Corn Husk Waste as a Sustainable Low-Cost Adsorbent for the Efficient Removal of Rhodamine B from Aqueous Solutions
Öz
Using corn husk ash, this research explores the development of an inexpensive, eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from aqueous solutions. The hypothesis was to minimize the negative environmental impact by reusing agricultural waste as an effective adsorbent. The adsorbent material (corn husk ash) was characterized through SEM, FTIR, and XRD analyses. Adsorption performance was evaluated under different initial pH values and ambient temperatures. The amount of dye adsorbed per unit of adsorbent reached a maximum capacity of 35.22 mg/g within a contact time of 90 minutes at neutral pH. Kinetic and isotherm models were applied to experimental data to investigate the mechanisms in the adsorption process, process design, and equilibrium distribution between phases. It has been determined that the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model are more suitable for the removal of rhodamine B dye from corn husk ash. To investigate the reusability of the adsorbent, regeneration tests were performed using pure water, and desorption efficiencies of 17.46% at ambient temperature and 24.99% at high temperature (50 °C) were calculated. This study demonstrates a sustainable approach consistent with green chemistry principles, offering numerous positive aspects such as the elimination of adsorbent preparation costs, the utilization of agricultural waste, minimum energy consumption, and reduced environmental pollution through waste disposal. The suitability of using corn husk ash for dye removal without chemical pretreatment has been demonstrated in this study.
