Climate-Resilient Design Strategies for the Built Environment: Adapting to Extreme Climate Risks
Öz
Climate change is widely regarded as one of the most pressing global challenges of the twenty-first century, impacting ecosystems, societies, and economies at multiple scales. Its consequences, including extreme weather events, floods, rising temperatures, prolonged heatwaves, melting glaciers, sea-level rise, droughts, storms, and wildfires, have intensified in both frequency and severity. These climate-related hazards have the potential to cause significant disruption to natural systems while simultaneously threatening human health, infrastructure, and economic stability. In particular, floods, extreme heat and heatwaves, high winds and severe storms, and fires pose substantial risks to the built environment, leading to structural damage, material degradation, service disruptions, and increased community vulnerability. This study adopts a comprehensive literature-based research methodology, reviewing and analysing existing academic studies, reports, and design guidelines concerning climate-resilient approaches in the built environment. Utilising this analytical framework, the research identifies key risk factors and evaluates resilient and adaptable design strategies with the aim of mitigating climate-induced hazards. These strategies address flood resistance, thermal performance under extreme heat, wind and storm resilience, and fire protection measures. The findings indicate that the integration of climate-responsive design strategies significantly enhances structural safety, long-term durability, and environmental sustainability. Moreover, the study demonstrates that adopting resilience-oriented design approaches improves adaptive capacity, reduces vulnerability, and supports the development of safer, more liveable environments. Ultimately, the research concludes that resilience is no longer optional but a fundamental requirement for future development in the face of increasing climate uncertainty.
