Evaluation of Sustainable Energy Performance in European Countries Using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Methods
Öz
Energy transition necessitates the restructuring of energy systems in their environmental, economic, and technological dimensions in line with the goals of combating climate change and sustainable development. In this process, evaluating countries' sustainable energy performance through multi-dimensional indicators is of great importance. The aim of this study is to comparatively analyze the sustainable energy performance of European countries using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Twenty European countries were evaluated using nine energy and environmental indicators obtained from the EUROSTAT database. Criterion weights were determined using the Equal Weighting, ENTROPY, and CRITIC methods; and the performance of countries was ranked using the TOPSIS, MABAC, PSI, ROV, WSM, WPM, and WASPAS methods. Final country rankings were created using the BORDA approach to integrate the results obtained from different methods. The findings show that sustainable energy performance is sensitive to the weighting method used, and different weighting scenarios can change country rankings. France ranked first in the Equal Weighting scenario, while Italy led in the ENTROPY approach and Spain in the CRITIC approach. However, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Austria were among the top-performing countries in most scenarios. The study contributes to the literature by demonstrating methodological sensitivity in measuring energy transition performance.
