Bilecik Seyh Edebali University Carbon Footprint Assessment: Identification of Emission Sources and Comparative Analysis
Öz
Universities have significant direct and indirect environmental impacts arising from their operations. Therefore, conducting carbon footprint assessments in higher education institutions plays a critical role in mitigating climate change-related risks. This study was conducted to identify the emission sources of Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University (BŞEU) and develop reduction strategies. The analysis process is based on the ISO 14064-1 standard and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol methodology. Emissions were examined in three main categories: direct, energy-related indirect, and other indirect emissions. The university's total emissions were 3,601 tons of CO2 eq. in 2022, while they decreased to 3,223 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq.) in 2023. For both years, the dominant emission source was natural gas consumption, accounting for 55.1% of the total. The results obtained indicate that, when compared with data from other universities reported in the literature, BŞEU’s emission value of 0.188 tons of CO₂ equivalent per capita per year is the lowest calculated per capita emission value. Based on the per capita emission values calculated for other universities in the literature, it was estimated that the total carbon footprint of the Turkish higher education system could range between 1.4 and 13.7 million tons of CO2 eq. This study is of great importance as it presents the university's corporate carbon inventory with concrete data for the first time and lays the foundation for the campus's climate change mitigation strategies.
