Spatial Displacement of Agricultural Lands and the Ecological Domino Effect in Antalya: A Spatial Analysis of Urban Sprawl (1990-2018)
Öz
This study aims to reveal the multidimensional and detrimental spatial impacts of land cover and land use (LULC) changes on agricultural lands in the province of Antalya (1990–2018), one of Türkiye’s most important tourism and agricultural centers. In this study, multi-temporal CORINE datasets provided by the European Environment Agency (EEA) were used; the data, integrated with Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques, were analyzed using a 10×10 arc-minute grid-based approach (173 grid cells of ~120 km² each, providing N = 5 temporal cross-sections × 173 grid cells = 865 effective spatial observations). The statistical significance and direction of spatial change trends were determined using the non-parametric Mann-Kendall rank correlation test. The analysis findings indicate that, over a 28-year period, artificial (urban/tourism) areas have grown at an extraordinary rate of 1,615.72%, encroaching upon prime alluvial agricultural plains along the coastline (Serik, Manavgat, Finike, etc.) with a statistical significance of p < 0.01. However, it was found that agricultural lands swallowed up by urban pressure did not experience an areal contraction across the province; on the contrary, they exhibited a quantitative growth of 64.84%. It has been empirically demonstrated that the main mechanism underlying this paradoxical situation is a “spatial displacement” and a “Domino Effect.” Displaced from the fertile coastal lands, agricultural activities have expanded onto the slopes of the Taurus and Beydağları Mountains and into the inland karst plateaus in order to survive; in the process, it has destroyed 35.45% of the basin's meadow and pasture areas, which serve as its ecological insurance, and converted them into agricultural land. In conclusion, it has been determined that, while agricultural lands in Antalya have increased quantitatively, they have become qualitatively marginalized and have been displaced to topographically more vulnerable areas. This devastating domino effect triggered by artificial areas is paving the way for soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and food security crises in the long term; it necessitates the implementation of urgent and stringent spatial planning policies to protect arable lowlands from urban encroachment.
