Prevention of Catheter-Related Urinary Tract Infections in Adult Intensive Care Units: A Systematic Review

Yıl 2023, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 1, 40 - 49, 10.05.2023

Öz

The aim of this study is to systematically review intervention studies for the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. For this purpose, four databases, namely PUBMED, CINAHL, COCHRANE Library and MEDLINE, were scanned. During the scan, “Preventing CAUTI infections” was used as a keyword. As a result of the examination of the studies published between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2022, 92 studies were reached. According to the inclusion criteria, 5 publications were evaluated within the scope of the study. As a result of the evaluation, it was determined that education on urinary catheter placement and maintenance, use of silicone foley catheter, and compliance with aseptic techniques in daily catheter care were effective in preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. With this systematic review, it was concluded that catheter-associate urinary tract infections can be prevented in adult intensive care units with evidence-based practices.
