The Effect of Kangaroo Care on Breastfeeding of the Newborn

Yıl 2023, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 1, 1 - 9, 10.05.2023

Öz

Holding the baby in an upright position on the parent's chest is commonly referred to as kangaroo care (KC) because of the simulation of marsupial care. KC consists of skin-to-skin contact, feeding the baby only with breast milk (exclusively breast feeding), and close follow-up. The mother-infant skin-to-skin contact, which constitutes the core of KC, induces the release of breast milk, thus breastfeeding as a secondary component. Dozens of benefits of KC are mentioned in the literature. One of them is that it provides positive contributions to the feeding of the newborn with breast milk. Considering the emphasis on breastfeeding; It has been reported in the literature that KC increases the success of breastfeeding and the duration of exclusively breast feeding, contributes positively to the amount of breast milk, shortens the transition period to breastfeeding, and increases the breastfeeding self-efficacy of the mother. As a feasible, natural and cost-effective intervention, it is recommended that KC be included as standard of care in the delivery of quality health care for all infants, regardless of geographic location or economic status.
