School Counselors’ Perception of Duty in the Context of Need, Quality and Job Satisfaction

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the school counselors’ opinions about the duties defined in the Guidance and Psychological Counseling (GPC) Services Regulation. The study group was consisted of 235 school counselors by using snowball sampling and convenience sampling method. As data collection instrument the duties in the GPC Services Regulation which are listed in a five-point Likert scale and personal information form were used. Results revealed that for school counselor the most needed duties in schools are; to participate in commissions and meetings, to give information and express opinions, to conduct individual counseling and recognition activities. The duties which school counselors perceive themselves competent are making assessment, giving information, participating in commissions and meetings, expressing their opinions, and guiding teachers. The duties which provide the most satisfaction are: to carry out individual counseling and recognition activities, to provide guidance to the families, and staff, organizing conferences and applying activities which requires special knowledge and skill in the field.
