BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF POSTGRADUATE THESES ON SUBSTANCE ADDICTION AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: THE CASE OF TÜRKİYE

Öz

This study aims to systematically examine postgraduate theses conducted in Türkiye between 2021 and 2025 that focus on substance addiction among university students, in order to identify thematic, methodological, and temporal trends in the field. Designed as a descriptive bibliometric analysis, the study analyzes 15 postgraduate theses that met the inclusion criteria following a comprehensive screening process. The theses were evaluated according to research method, sample characteristics, year of publication, thesis type, academic discipline, and thematic focus. The findings indicate that research output peaked in 2023 and that the overwhelming majority of studies were conducted at the master’s level using exclusively quantitative research designs, with questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. The studies were predominantly concentrated in the fields of psychology and sport sciences, reflecting a disciplinary clustering in the literature. In contrast, qualitative and mixed-methods approaches were notably underrepresented, highlighting a lack of methodological diversity. Thematic analysis revealed that the most frequently addressed topics included levels of substance use awareness, risk factors associated with addiction, and variables related to protective and preventive mechanisms. Overall, the findings suggest that postgraduate research on substance addiction among university students in Türkiye remains limited in terms of interdisciplinary scope and analytical depth. The study underscores the need for greater emphasis on doctoral-level research, qualitative and mixed-methods designs, and interdisciplinary collaboration to better capture the complex and multidimensional nature of substance addiction. The results are expected to inform future academic research and contribute to the development of evidence-based public health and youth policies.
