GRAIN SIZE, TOTAL HEAVY MINERAL AND ELEMENT DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL FACTORS OF CURRENT SEDIMENTS ON THE FLOOR OF HISARONU AND DATCA BAYS

Öz

This paper explain research results for Holocene sedimentary processes and controlling factors on Datça and
Hisarönü Bays located in south west Turkey. For this purpose, we collected sea bottom grab samples (upper 30
cm) from 71 stations and seismic profiles (we use only one sample explain to sedimentary process) collected in
MTA-SELEN research ship on Hisarönü and Datça Bays. It is known and widely applied in seismic analysis
methods and techniques are used on seismic profile which according to the continental shelf edge or threshold
current -90 / -120 m water depth. At the same time, seismic profile were showed sea level changes of the
Quaternary period and exhibits seismic facies parameters. According to radiocarbon dating calculations and we
estimate these sediments which are 2694-14700 years of before present. Sediments grain size are 1-18% gravel,
7-85% sand, 6-69% silt and 2-30% clay size is composed of clastic material. Although silt and clay (mud) the
most widely sediments are in our investigation area, we run into significant sand and gravel grain size important.
We discuss regional differences grain size distribution and to be here residual (relic) sediments are in our
investigation area. The total amount of heavy mineral-rich black sand is mostly below 2%, ophiolite and
chromite-rich central and eastern regions is as high as 13%. Inorganic geochemistry of sediments are Mg, Cu, Ni
and Fe amount is significant. Regional changing river drainage system, bay morphology, terrestrial and marine
resources and outcrops also waves and currents effect not only sediment grain size distribution, but also effect
the total heavy mineral content and the main elements composition.
