One Hundred Shades of White İsimli Romanda Güç ve Hayatta Kalma Mutfağı

Öz

One Hundred Shades of White (2003) Preethi Nair tarafından yazılmıştır ve değişen sosyo-kültürel koşullarda kadın karakterlerin güçlendiği bir alan olarak tasvir edilen mutfakta zaman geçiren Nalini ile Maya’nın hikâyesinin anlatıldığı romandır. Roman, yemek, yemek pişirme, mutfak konuları ve kadın karakterler tarafından yalnızca evde değil, aynı zamanda profesyonel olarak da gerçekleştirilen diğer mutfak işlerinin tasviri açısından son derece zengindir. Nalini ile Maya ev ve profesyonel mutfak ortamlarının sağladığı imkânlar sayesinde zorlukların üstesinden gelmektedirler. Bu doğrultuda, bu çalışmanın amacı Preethi Nair’in anlatısında tasvir edilen kadın karakterler için mutfağın bir güç ve hayatta kalma alanı olarak rolünü ve önemini nasıl betimlediğini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmada mutfağın kadınların alanı olarak nasıl resmedildiği incelenirken Nalini ve Maya’nın deneyimlerine odaklanılmış olup büyükanne Ammu’nun tecrübelerine de yer verilmiştir. Mutfağın mekânsal ayrıntıları mutfak ile bu kadınsı mekânda güç kazanan ve hayatta kalan kadınlar arasındaki ilişkiye dair fikir vermektedir.

Power and Survival Kitchen in One Hundred Shades of White

Öz

One Hundred Shades of White (2003) is written by Preethi Nair and tells the story of Nalini and Maya who spend time in the kitchen depicted as a space where female characters become empowered in changing socio-cultural conditions. The novel is exceptionally rich in representations of food, cooking, culinary issues, and other kitchen work, both domestic and professional, performed by the female characters. Nalini and Maya survive the difficulties through the opportunities provided by domestic and professional kitchens. Accordingly, this study aims to reveal how Preethi Nair portrays the kitchen’s role and importance as a space of power and survival for the women depicted in the story. It focuses on the experiences of Nalini and Maya and mentions the experiences of the grandmother, Ammu, while examining how the kitchen is portrayed as the women’s domain. The kitchen’s spatial details provide insight into the relationship between the kitchen and the women who gain power and survive in this feminized spatial entity.
