The Tension of Historical Time: Experience and Expectation
Öz
Taking as its point of departure the structural tension between experience and expectation, this article discusses, from the perspective of philosophy of history, the question of how historical time can be conceptualized in modern historiography. The fundamental problem of the article is how the structure of historical time—which cannot be reduced to chronological succession—can be thought through distinctions such as irreversibility, repeatability, and the simultaneity of the non-simultaneous. To address this problem, the article draws on Reinhart Koselleck’s concept of “sediments of time” (Zeitschichten) and examines how the tension between the space of experience and the horizon of expectation operates as a constitutive dimension of historical time. Within this framework, historical time is conceived as a layered pattern in which plural temporalities—operating together within different velocities, continuities, and delays—interpenetrate one another; conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte), in turn, is positioned as a complementary level of analysis that enables the tracing of the semantic dimension of historical meaning-making. The principal contribution of the article is to reassess Koselleck’s theory not merely as a proposal for historical methodology, but as a philosophy of history that interrogates the temporal conditions under which historical knowledge becomes possible, and to bring to light the critical dimension of the relationship between time and experience.
