Teaching Style Preferences, Usage Levels and Their Value Perceptions of These Styles of Sports Students

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the teaching style preferences, usage levels and value perceptions of sport sciences undergraduate students regarding these styles. Cross-sectional survey model, one of the quantitative research approaches, was used in the study. The sample group is 290 students studying at Trabzon University Faculty of Sport Sciences in the 2020-2021 academic year. In this study, "Physical Education Teachers' Teaching Styles and Value Perceptions Scale" developed by Kulinna and Cothran (2003) and adapted into Turkish by İnce and Hünük (2010) was used to collect data. SPSS 21.0 statistical package programme was used to evaluate the data. During the data evaluation, t-test was used to examine independent groups, while frequency, arithmetic mean and standard deviation techniques were used in terms of statistical method. When the results are considered in general, it is seen that physical education teacher candidates prefer more teacher-centred styles in terms of teaching styles usage levels and value perceptions. In addition, it was determined that they preferred self teaching and learner initiated styles, which are learner-centred styles, less. When interpreted by considering similar studies, it can be said that teaching styles are resistant to change. With this study, it was revealed that instructors should adopt a student-centred approach. In future studies, pre-service teachers' orientations towards teaching styles, the reasons for preferring these styles and their perceptions of the value of styles can be examined in depth, and whether practices that encourage active learning in university education are sufficiently emphasised can be the subject of research.

Spor Eğitimi Alan Öğrencilerin Öğretim Stili Tercihleri, Kullanım Düzeyleri ve Stillere İlişkin Değer Algıları

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, spor bilimleri lisans düzeyindeki öğrencilerin öğretim stili tercihleri, kullanım düzeyleri ve bu stillere ilişkin değer algılarını incelemektir. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yaklaşımlarından kesitsel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Örneklem grubu 2020-2021 eğitim-öğretim yılında Trabzon Üniversitesi Spor Bilimleri Fakültesi’nde öğrenim gören 290 öğrencidir. Veri toplamak amacıyla bu araştırmada Kulinna ve Cothran (2003) tarafından geliştirilen, İnce ve Hünük (2010) tarafından Türkçe’ye uyarlanan “Beden Eğitimi Öğretmenleri Öğretim Stilleri Değer Algıları” ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde SPSS 21.0 istatistik paket programı kullanılmıştır. Değerlendirmede bağımsız gruplar için t-testi kullanılırken istatistiksel metot anlamında frekans, aritmetik ortalama ve standart sapma teknikleri ile analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar genel olarak ele alındığında öğretim stilleri kullanım düzeyleri ve değer algıları açısından beden eğitimi öğretmen adaylarının sıklıkla öğreten merkezli sunuş yöntemi ağırlıklı stilleri tercih ettikleri, buluş yöntemi ağırlıklı stillerden olan kendi kendine öğretme ve öğrencinin başlatması stillerini ise daha az tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Benzer içerikteki çalışmalar dikkate alınarak yorumlandığında öğretim stillerinin değişime dirençli bir yapıda olduğu söylenebilir. Bu çalışma ile öğretim elemanlarının öğrenciyi merkeze alan bir yaklaşımı benimsemeleri gerekliliği ortaya çıkmıştır. İlerleyen çalışmalarda, nitel gelenek içerisinde öğretmen adaylarının öğretim stillerine ilişkin yönelimleri, bu stilleri tercih etme sebepleri ve stillere ilişkin değer algıları derinlemesine incelenebilir, üniversite eğitimde aktif öğrenmeyi teşvik eden uygulamaların yeterince vurgulanıp vurgulanmadığı araştırma konusu edilebilir.
