The Monument of Quintus Vedius Capito at Kaunos

In the early 1970’s the monument of Quintus Vedius Capito was found on the northern edge of the Kaunos Harbour Agora, adjacent to the northern edge of the Glykinna Monument in the west Stoa. The northern part of this monument is preserved to approximately the height of the base while only the base survives from the southern part. It comprises a step at the bottom, a bank above, the lower side of the profile of a low-base, high orthostate blocks and the upper side of the body and high-profile crown orthostate blocks. The inscriptions on the monument are in three different positions: on the bottom face of the step, on the flat section above the section profile of the lower base and, carved upon the face of the orthostate blocks. Some spolien material was employed and there is some imprecision in terms of the construction technique employed. In appearance therefore, this monument seems unworthy of the honor of the family members whose names are recorded on it who were so precious to Kaunos. It seems for some reason this monument was first erected in some other part of the city and it was subsequently re-erected in its present location. Regarding the Vedius family, the father superior of the goddess Leto, grandfather Quintus Vedius, P. f. Capito began with the priesthood, maintained, like Flavia Maxima, within the members of the same family. This monument was erected at the end of the reign of Emperor Hadrianus, the joining has been period of last member Flavia Maxima, the end of Antonius Pius.

Kaunos’taki Quintus Vedius Capito Anıtı

Öz

Quintus Vedius Capito Anıtı, 1970’li yılların ba­şında, Liman Agorası’nın kuzey kenarındaki Stoa’nın he­men batısında, Glykinna Anıtı’nın kuzey kenarına bi­ti­şik durumda tespit edilmiştir. Anıtın kuzey yöne doğ­ru olan bölümü yaklaşık kaide yüksekliğine kadar, diğer güney bölümü ise yalnızca kaideye kadar korun­muş durumdadır. Anıt en altta bir basamak, onun üs­tünde bir oturma bankı, alt tarafı profilli alçak bir kaide, yüksek orthostat bloklarla oluşturulmuş gövde ve üst tarafı profilli taç bloklarından oluşmakta­dır. Anıt üze­rinde 3 farklı alanda yazıt görülmektedir: En altta basa­mağın cephesinde; alçak kaidenin profilli kısmının üze­rin­deki düz alanda ve orthostat blokları­nın cephe­sinde. Anıtın inşasında şipoliyen malzeme kullanılmış­tır. Ay­rıca yapı tekniği açısından özensizdir. Bu yüzden bu anıt Kaunos için bu kadar değerli olan bu ailenin onu­runa yakışmamakta­dır. Bu da anıtın kentin başka bir yerinde dikili olduğunu ve tekrar bugünkü yerine bile­me­diğimiz herhangi bir nedenden dolayı yeniden dikil­miş olabileceğini akla getirmektedir. Vedius ailesi ile ilgili olarak, tanrıça Leto’nun başrahibi olan dede Quin­tus Vedius P. f. Capito ile başlayan rahiplik göre­vinin, Flavia Maxima gibi aynı sülalenin sonraki fertleri tara­fından da sürdürülmüş olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Anıtın Hadrian Dönemi’nin sonla­rında dikildiğini ve ekleme­lerin de, son kuşak olan Flavia Maxima’nın yaşa­dığı Anto­nius Pius Dönemi’nin sonlarında yapıl­mış olduğu söylenebilir.
