HELLEN MİTOLOJİSİ VE RİTÜELLERİNDE DOMUZ

Öz

Kadim toplumlarda, hayvanlar gerek günlük hayatta gerekse panteonlarda oldukça önemli kabul edilmişlerdir. Hellen mitolojisinde hayvanlar, tanrısal niteliklerin taşınmasında ve ritüel pratiklerin yerine getirilmesinde merkezi bir rol oynar. Özellikle domuz, doğurganlık, bereket ve ölümle ilişkilendirilen güçlü bir semboldür. Mitolojik anlatılarda yabani domuzlar, tanrısal semboller olarak yer almakta ve arınma ritüellerinde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Eleusis Gizemleri gibi arınma ve yenilenme törenlerinde domuzların kurban edilmesi, onların hem arınma hem de yeniden doğuşun bir simgesi olarak dini ve toplumsal işlevine ışık tutar. Ayrıca domuz, yaşam ve ölüm arasındaki geçişi simgeleyerek döngüsel varoluş anlayışındaki önemini pekiştirir. Demeter, Persephone ve Aphrodite gibi tanrıçalarla olan bağlantısı, domuzun doğa döngüleri içindeki rolünü ve toplumsal ritüellerin gereksinimlerini yansıtarak halkın dini inanışlarını şekillendirir. Bu çalışma, arkeolojik bulgular, antik metinler ve akademik yorumları analiz ederek Hellen mitolojisinde domuzun sembolik anlamını ve ritüellerdeki işlevini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, bu hayvanın antik dünyanın dini ve toplumsal yapısı içindeki işlevi daha kapsamlı bir şekilde ortaya konulacaktır.

Pig in Ancient Hellenic Mythology and Rituals

Öz

In ancient societies, animals were considered very important both in daily life and in pantheons. In Hellenic mythology, animals play a central role in conveying divine attributes and in the performance of ritual practices. The pig, in particular, is a highly symbolic creature associated with fertility, abundance, and death. In mythological accounts, boars appear as symbols of deities and play a crucial role in purification rituals. The sacrifice of pigs in purification and renewal ceremonies, such as the Eleusinian Mysteries, highlights their religious and societal significance as symbols of both cleansing and regeneration. Furthermore, pigs symbolize the transition between life and death, reinforcing their importance in the cyclical understanding of existence. Their connections with deities such as Demeter, Persephone, and Aphrodite reflect their role in nature’s cycles and in fulfilling communal ritual needs, shaping the religious beliefs of the people. This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning of the pig in Hellenic mythology and its function in rituals by analyzing ancient texts, archaeological findings and academic interpretations. In this context, the function of this animal in the religious and social structure of the ancient world will be revealed more comprehensively.
