Economic Determinants of Refugees and Asylum Seekers’ Work Intentions in Türkiye

Öz

Since the beginning of the 21st century, political and social variables in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq have initiated a major wave of migration to Türkiye. This wave of migration is perceived to have caused various economic problems, such as increases in housing prices, rents, and employment challenges. However, it has also created an opportunity for Türkiye, whose population is starting to age, to meet its workforce needs and establish new enterprises. Some refugees and asylum seekers in Türkiye wish to migrate to Europe. The collapse of the Assad regime in Syria has also opened the possibility for some Syrians to return. This study aims to reveal the factors determining the intentions of refugees and asylum seekers to stay and work in Türkiye. For this purpose, a survey was conducted among refugees and asylum seekers in Türkiye. The results concluded that satisfaction with the economic conditions in Türkiye positively affects intentions to work here, while the economic attractiveness of other countries negatively impacts those intentions.

Mülteci ve Sığınmacılar Türkiye’de Çalışma Niyetlerinin İktisadi Belirleyicileri

Öz

21. Yüzyılın başından itibaren Suriye, Afganistan, Irak vb. ülkelerinde meydana gelen siyasi, toplumsal değişkenler Türkiye’ye büyük bir göç dalgasını başlatmıştır. Bu göç dalgasının çeşitli ekonomik sorunlara (konut fiyatları ve kiraların artışı, istihdam vb) neden olduğu algısı ortaya çıkmıştır. Ancak bu göç akımı nüfusu yaşlanmaya başlayan Türkiye’nin işgücü ihtiyacının karşılanması ve yeni girişimlerin kurulması için fırsat oluşturmuştur. Türkiye’deki sığınmacı ve mültecilerin bir kısmı Türkiye’den Avrupa’ya geçmek istemektedirler. Suriye’de Esad rejiminin çökmesi de Suriye’lilerin bir kısmımın geri dönmesi ihtimalini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı sığınmacı ve mültecilerin Türkiye’de kalıp çalışma niyetlerini belirleyen faktörleri ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu amaçla Türkiye’deki sığınmacı ve mültecilere anket uygulanmıştır. Türkiye iktisadi koşullarından memnuniyetin Türkiye’de çalışma niyetlerini pozitif, diğer ülkelerin iktisadi cazibesinin ise Türkiye’de çalışma niyetlerini olumsuz etkilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
