Football Fandom Among Sports Sciences Students: An Examination in Terms of Demographic and Sport-Related Variables

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of fanaticism among football supporters using the Football Supporter Fanaticism Scale (FSFS), to determine whether these levels differed according to selected demographic and behavioral variables, and to identify the variables predicting fanatic tendencies related to football fandom.

Method: This study employed a cross-sectional quantitative survey design. A total of 219 participants voluntarily took part in the study. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and the Football Supporter Fanaticism Scale, which consists of the subdimensions of Tendency Toward Violence in Thought and Action and Institutional Belonging. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used for data analysis.

Results: The FSFS demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = .95). According to the classification criteria, 15.5% of participants were classified as fanatics, 32.9% as team supporters, and 51.6% as football enthusiasts. Independent samples t-test results indicated no significant gender differences in total FSFS scores (p > .05). However, one-way ANOVA results revealed a significant difference according to match-viewing frequency, showing that individuals who watched matches more frequently exhibited stronger fanatic tendencies (p < .05). Correlation analyses demonstrated strong positive relationships between FSFS subdimensions and total scores. Multiple regression analysis showed that the model was significant and explained 6% of the variance in fanaticism scores (R² = .06, p < .05). The strongest predictor in the model was match-viewing frequency.

Conclusion: Among the variables examined, behavioral engagement with football, particularly match-viewing frequency, showed a stronger association with fanatic tendencies than basic demographic characteristics. However, given the modest explanatory power of the regression model, these findings should be interpreted as associations rather than causal relationships.

Spor Bilimleri Öğrencileri Arasında Futbol Taraftarlığı: Demografik ve Sporla İlişkili Değişkenler Açısından Bir İnceleme

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Futbol Taraftarı Fanatiklik Ölçeği (FTFÖ) kullanılarak futbol taraftarlarının fanatiklik düzeylerinin incelenmesi, bu düzeylerin seçilmiş demografik ve davranışsal değişkenlere göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığının belirlenmesi ve futbol taraftarlığına ilişkin fanatik eğilimleri yordayan değişkenlerin ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır.

Yöntem: Bu araştırmada kesitsel nicel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya gönüllü olarak toplam 219 katılımcı dahil edilmiştir. Veriler, Kişisel Bilgi Formu ile Şiddete Yönelik Düşünce ve Eylem Eğilimi ile Kurumsal Aidiyet alt boyutlarından oluşan Futbol Taraftarı Fanatiklik Ölçeği aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler, bağımsız örneklemler t testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA), Pearson korelasyon analizi ve çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi kullanılmıştır.

Bulgular: Ölçeğin yüksek düzeyde iç tutarlılığa sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir (Cronbach’s α = .95). Sınıflandırma kriterlerine göre katılımcıların %15.5’i fanatik, %32.9’u takım taraftarı ve %51.6’sı futbolsever olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Bağımsız örneklemler t testi sonuçları toplam puanlarda cinsiyete göre anlamlı farklılık olmadığını göstermiştir (p > .05). Buna karşın, tek yönlü varyans analizi sonuçları maç izleme sıklığına göre anlamlı farklılık olduğunu ve maçları daha sık izleyen bireylerin daha güçlü fanatiklik eğilimleri gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur (p < .05). Korelasyon analizleri alt boyutlar ile toplam puan arasında güçlü pozitif ilişkiler olduğunu göstermiştir. Çoklu regresyon analizi sonuçlarına göre model anlamlı bulunmuş ve fanatiklik puanlarındaki varyansın %6’sını açıklamıştır (R² = .06, p < .05). Modelde en güçlü yordayıcı değişken maç izleme sıklığı olmuştur.

Sonuç: İncelenen değişkenler arasında, futbola yönelik davranışsal katılımın, özellikle maç izleme sıklığının, fanatiklik eğilimleriyle temel demografik özelliklere göre daha güçlü bir ilişki gösterdiği söylenebilir. Bununla birlikte, regresyon modelinin sınırlı açıklayıcılığı dikkate alındığında, bu bulgular nedensel ilişkilerden ziyade değişkenler arasındaki ilişkiler çerçevesinde değerlendirilmelidir.
