The Role of Motivational Self-Talk in Attenuating the Effects of Mental Fatigue on Repeated Sprint Performance
Öz
Purpose: This study examined the effects of mental fatigue on repeated sprint performance and whether motivational self-talk could attenuate these effects.
Method: Sixteen physically active male university students participated in this randomized crossover study. Participants completed three conditions: control, mental fatigue, and mental fatigue combined with motivational self-talk. Mental fatigue was induced with a 15-min computer-based Stroop task; its effectiveness was verified with visual analogue scale ratings taken before and after the task. Anaerobic performance was assessed using the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST). Data were analyzed with Friedman tests, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, and one-way and two-way (3 protocols × 6 sprints) repeated measures ANOVAs.
Results: Subjective mental fatigue increased significantly after the Stroop task in both conditions (p<0.001; dz=1.49–1.70). Mean sprint time differed significantly across conditions (χ²(2)=21.50, p<0.001). Mental fatigue increased sprint time relative to control (p<0.001, r=0.58), whereas motivational self-talk improved sprint performance relative to mental fatigue (p<0.001, r=0.61); self-talk did not differ significantly from control (adjusted p=0.312), although equivalence was not tested. For power output, significant main effects of protocol and sprint and a significant Protocol × Sprint interaction emerged (F(4.652, 69.774)=4.368, p=0.002, η²p=0.226); mean power remained significantly lower in the self-talk than the control condition (p=0.032). A significant protocol effect was also found for the fatigue index (F(1.475, 22.119)=18.165, p<0.001, η²p=0.548).
Conclusion: Mental fatigue negatively affects repeated sprint performance and anaerobic power in physically active individuals. Motivational self-talk appears useful for partially attenuating these effects; however, performance was not fully restored to control levels, and the design does not permit interpretation as statistical moderation.
