FOOD INSECURITY IN THE CONTEXT OF DISASTERS: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF GLOBAL RESEARCH TRENDS (2011–2025) *

Öz

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research on food insecurity in the context of disasters, focusing on knowledge production, thematic trends, and international collaboration networks. Using the Web of Science Core Collection, 459 articles published between 2011 and 2025 were analyzed with Bibliometrix software. The results reveal a substantial increase in publications after 2019, largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the fragility of food systems and supply chains during crises. Developed countries, particularly the United States, South Africa, and Australia, dominate the field in terms of publication output, while disaster-related food insecurity in low- and middle-income regions remains underrepresented despite being the most vulnerable. Keyword analysis demonstrates that disaster-related food insecurity is strongly interlinked with climate change, agricultural sustainability, poverty, and health, illustrating its multidimensional nature. The most frequently used terms include “climate change,” “insecurity,” and “risk,” underscoring the intersection of environmental and social vulnerabilities. Collaboration networks, however, reveal structural imbalances, as scientific production is concentrated in specific institutions and countries, limiting the inclusiveness of global research. Citation analysis indicates that highly cited works emphasize the intersection of food insecurity with environmental change, urban vulnerability, and public health outcomes. Findings suggest that disaster-related food insecurity extends beyond nutrition and health to encompass environmental degradation, agricultural fragility, and socio-economic resilience. This study concludes that disaster-related food insecurity should be addressed through cross-sectoral policies integrating climate-adaptive agriculture, sustainable food systems, and equitable access to resources, especially for marginalized populations. By mapping scientific trends and identifying research gaps, the study contributes to shaping future research agendas and guiding policy development in the field of food security under disaster conditions.
