A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS ON THE ROLE OF GRANDMOTHERS’ CHILDCARE SUPPORT IN THE SUSTAINABILITY OF WOMEN’S EMPLOYMENT

Although women’s labor force participation rates have increased in recent years, this rise does not necessarily indicate the sustainability of employment. Women’s work trajectories are often interrupted, particularly during childbirth and early motherhood, when the question of how and by whom childcare is provided becomes a key factor shaping women’s continuity in the labor market. This study examines the role of grandmothers in sustaining women’s employment. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with fifteen mothers in Türkiye who have children aged between 0 and 5. The study analyzes the function of grandmothers’ childcare support in sustaining mothers’ employment and explores the ways in which childcare responsibilities are organized within families. The findings reveal that grandmothers’ involvement in childcare facilitates mothers’ decisions to remain in the labor force; however, it also indicates that care labor is being redistributed intergenerationally among women. The study offers a comprehensive understanding of the sustainability of women’s employment through the lens of motherhood experiences and intergenerational care relations, highlighting the invisible care work performed by grandmothers.
