Academic–industry collaboration in public relations education: A qualitative study of professional associations in Türkiye
Öz
Public relations education today is no longer limited to the transfer of theoretical knowledge; it is continuously updated to provide practical skills and establish stronger integration with the industry. In this context, academia–industry collaboration is important for keeping curricula up to date and enhancing students’ professional competencies. Professional associations are among the key stakeholders contributing to this process. This study examines the roles of professional associations operating in public relations within undergraduate education in Türkiye. Using a qualitative research method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine board members from the Public Relations Association of Türkiye (PRAT; Türkiye Halkla İlişkiler Derneği), the Communication Consultancies Association of Türkiye (CCAT; İletişim Danışmanlığı Şirketleri Derneği), and the Corporate Communicators Association (CCA; Kurumsal İletişimciler Derneği). The findings were evaluated under six themes: the mission of professional associations in public relations education, sectoral needs and competency expectations, interaction with universities, contributions to curriculum and accreditation processes, challenges in academic collaboration, and proposed solutions. The study concludes that stakeholder relationships between professional associations and universities in Türkiye should be institutionally restructured.
