A Struggle For Rights From The History of Occupational Diseases: The Radium Girls Theatre Play and Women's Workers Movement Leadership

Öz

This study addresses a rights-based struggle, which constitutes one of the historical turning points in working life, especially for women workers, from the perspective of women workers movements and in the context of leadership theories. This struggle carried out by women workers in the USA has inspired a theater play called "A Fairy Tale: Radium Girls" staged in Turkey. The story of the Radium Girls, which has reached the present day from the 1920s, reflects the history of women who pioneered social reform by addressing issues related to industrialization, science, consumer health and institutional corruption. In this study, the motivations of women fighting for rights in the pioneering story of Radium Girls and the clues of women's leadership they showed were revealed using the document analysis method. Thematic content analysis was performed on the text. Although the themes obtained from the text such as "being aware of one's weaknesses", "knowing oneself" of authentic leadership, "being listened to", "determined in the struggle", some dimensions of transformational leadership in this sense, it can be said that a new leadership style where all of them come together is present. In the behaviors where these themes emerge, "being listened to", not only an effective communicator but also a "wise" character who is a "storyteller" emerges in woman leadership.

Meslek Hastalıkları Tarihinden Bir Hak Arama Mücadelesi: Radyum Kızları Oyunu ve Kadın İşçi Hareketi Liderliği

Bu makalede özellikle kadın işçiler için çalışma hayatında tarihi dönüm noktalarından birini oluşturan hak temelli bir mücadele, kadın işçi hareketleri perspektifinden ve liderlik teorileri bağlamında ele alınmıştır. 1920'lerden günümüze ulaşan Radyum Kızları hikayesi, endüstrileşme, bilim, tüketici sağlığı ve kurumsal yolsuzlukla ilgili konuları ele alarak toplumsal reformlara öncülük eden kadınların tarihini yansıtmaktadır. ABD'de kadın işçilerin yürüttüğü bu mücadele, yurt dışında pek çok film ve oyuna konu olduğu gibi, Türkiye'de sahnelenen "Bir Peri Masalı: Radyum Kızları" adlı bir tiyatro oyununa ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Araştırmada bu gerçek olaydan ilhamla yazılıp sahnelenmiş oyun metni kadın liderliğine has unsurları ortaya koyabilmek üzere tematik içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Ortaya çıkartılan temalardan "zayıflıklarının farkında olmak", otantik liderliğin "kendini bilmek", "dinlenilmek", "mücadelede kararlı olmak", dönüştürücü liderliğin bazı boyutları ile uyumlu olmakla birlikte, bir anlamda hepsinin bir araya geldiği bütünsel bir liderlik tarzının mevcut olduğu saptanmıştır. Kadın liderliği davranışı olarak ayrıştırılan “dinlenilmek”, kadın liderin sadece etkili bir iletişimci değil aynı zamanda bir "hikaye anlatıcısı" olan "bilge" yönünü ortaya koyar.
